      Talk n Tech

Talk n Tech is a group that we have on facebook for sharing good reads we find on the internet.

For a long time I've had this idea for creating an app for it, since having the group on facebook has a few drawbacks. Ok it has one drawback. And that is it forces you to visit facebook, which for me is annoying. For one thing, there are lots of distractions there when all you want to do is read. The only reason me and Jimbo decided to put it on facebook is so we can invite other friends to it, and also so that other people can checkout the stuff we're reading.

A few ideas I had for the app:

      • Search (title and content)

I know you can just google for it. But this is better since there is fewer content to wade through.

      • Tagging

Good for filtering stuff that you'd want to read right now.

      • Quoting

This is something we often do in the facebook group, and it would be nice to have a discussion thread for every quote posted, as opposed to just one thread created in facebook.

      • Voting

Good for filtering out the not so good articles.

      • Save article

This is a very important feature. Aside from the app just giving out the link to the article, it saves the article so it won't be lost, in case the site goes down, or the article owner decides to remove the article.

      • Related articles

Almost the same as filtering, but more specific.

So far that's it. What's holding me back right now from making this app is that it's still not justifiable to make. There are still few members in our group, so everything is still very manageable. I'm still looking for a very solid reason to put this into motion.

      App idea #1

Get updated with friends through friends

Not all people post status updates about themselves. So how do we get updates about them? We ask our friends.

Some people are too shy to post stuff about them like "I just got promoted!" or "It's my birthday! Greet me!". So how do we know if someone needs congratulating or a good pat in the back? We ask our friends.

Most people are often too sad to post about what's bothering them. Maybe they'll post a sad smiley or an ambiguous rant. How do we know what's up with them? We ask our friends.

This is an app where you'll get updates about people from other people (including yourself). You post updates about your friends so his/her other friends can be "in the know" with what's up with their buddies. Simple as that.

      Good idea or bad idea?

      Crazy Idea: Wifi Spot House

I once came up with this very cool idea. I would get a house or a big apartment, then turn it into a wifi spot.

So basically anyone with a laptop or cellphone or any type of thing that could connect to wifi could go to my place for the internet. So its a kind of internet cafe, except the only thing I'd be providing is the place, the internet connection, and the electrcity. I'd charge of course, but it would be a flat rate, since it's very tiring to keep track of people when you have an hourly rate (or maybe I'm just lazy hehe!). Plus I don't have control over the devices, so I can't actually just turn off their connection to the wifi. Actually I think it's better if I just charge a small amount for the people who come just for the connection, then a higher amount for people who will use electricity to keep their devices alive (That's actually good, since a lot of laptops battery only lasts 2-4 hours. hehe!)

So where did I come up with this idea? Well actually there are lots of reasons:
      - I wanna have my own place. And more importantly, I wanna have a bad-ass internet connection for my place. So why not make my house pay for its own bills? Farmers turn their land into farms right? (hahay, me always thinking of ways to minimize personal expenses and make money hehe!)
      - I also want a place where my friends could hang out, hehe, that's always a big thing for people who belong to small tight-knit groups (think friends or how i met your mother). Maybe I should also convince some them to live with me so I don't have to handle all the expenses by myself. :D
      - I see lots of people who always hang out in gasoline stations (caltex star mart) and coffee shops for the internet connection. Gasoline stations are not very nice places to hangout, since well, it smells gasoline 24/7 and also you could die there since it's a sitting time bomb waiting for someone to throw a cigarette butt (think zoolander). Coffee shops are nice, they smell very good and they have couches, but I think they're only for high-class people who are beautiful looking and well-versed. I on the other hand want a place where you can just sprawl on the floor dressed in house clothes and no one would care. :D
      - Nowadays a lot of people own mobile devices that can connect to a wifi connection. And personally, I prefer surfing the internet using my own personal device, since I'm very picky with machines (I want ubuntu powered, at least 2gb awesomeness yo!), and I also don't want to be using a virus infested, pop-up vomiting, keyboard logger powered windows machine (hope I don't hurt anyone's feeling with this).
      - I haven't seen or heard of anything like this before.

So the goal is to make the place as homey as possible with laid-back atmosphere (it is my house after all). Jack johnson music in the background. Couches and beanbags all around, no freaking uncomfortable plastic chairs that have broken backs. Also an awesome rug where I can sprawl myself in my house clothes. :D

It definitely should serve coffee, maybe just 3 in 1 nescafe will do :D. This isn't a coffee shop any way.

I don't really like the idea of serving food, since I don't want it to be a place where people eat, I think it's too much. Maybe I should buy a house that's near a tapsilogan or carenderia so people don't need to leave just to eat?

I could also put a foosball or ping pong table in there, since sitting for more than 6+ hours is very dangerous to your health.

And I'd also need someone to oversee the place, since I can't be at home all day, and I wanna be able to go to beaches and other faraway places. Or maybe I should put it somewhere that's near the beach? That would be very nice.

So far this is all I've come up. I think I should really start interviewing internet cafe owners so I'd have a clue of the electricity costs.

I really like this idea, and every once in a while this comes back in my head to bug me. So I thought I might as well blog about it. It's a bit crazy I know, but hell I don't care! You don't get to tell me what I can or can't do!
