My first ultra. 65 kilometers. From Cebu City Capitol to Toledo City Gymnasium via the Transcentral Highway. I had the official finishing time of 11 hours and 4 minutes, 1 good hour before the cut-off time. And I got to the top 100!

This was no ordinary ultra. As if the 65km distance was not hard enough, the route also goes up and down Cebu's mountains (800m elavation). By the time you get down from the mountains (at 40 kms), it's blistering hot, and you still had 25kms to go.

I'm very happy that I made it. I've been waiting/wanting to run this ultra since last year. I almost didn't run it, due to knee and shin injuries I incurred this January to late February. And it was also too late to train, and I didn't get the mileage that I wanted to feel prepared for the race. But I made up for it. By March I was back to my weekly runs, then I got to run two half marathons, then I did two LSDs on the actual race route. After that 2nd LSD, I knew I was going to be able to finish the race, and I did.

I'm still sad that Rose and Mark didn't make it. They worked so hard for this race. But I'm also very glad that Armie pushed on even after the cutoff. And also to Odina and our new found running member Stacey for finishing at the exact cutoff time. Jade blew us all away for finishing at the top 3 in women's category.

Ultra thanks to our support crew, and also to all support crews that day (I think I asked for a sponge from every one of them). Special thanks to JD for pacing with me on his bike from km 30-ish until the end. Thanks also to Balamban and Toledo locals who offered water when I was near fainting from the heat. I wouldn't have made it to 11 hours without all of them.

When you push yourself beyond the limits, amazing shit happens.

Every simple thing you do will mean the world. Every breath, every step, every drop of sweat that slides down your forehead, every gulp of water, all of these tiny events become heavenly. You're still doing the same thing you've been doing all along, but somehow now every little step you take feels like a great achievement.

It's amazing. The moment you surpass what you've previously accomplished. You become someone else. It feels like anything is possible, and only you can make it happen.

You break everything everyone (including you) has thought about what you can do. You are in full control of what happens from this moment on. You just have to keep on going.

Sometimes we all need a reminder that anything is possible. That the limits we impose on ourselves are just excuses to keep us sane, or comfortable, or safe.

Congratulations to my friends Jimbo Cortes, Marie Armie Garde and Rose Buenconsejo for pushing everyone's expectations on what is possible beyond the limits.

      My first Kai sandals

I recently bought a pair of Kai running sandals. I thought I'd give them a try so I'd know what minimalist footwear in the market felt like.

Before kai sandals the thinnest stuff I've worn was only Joseph's warat shoes, our own version of huaraches, which are slipper soles with some ordinary strings.

After my first long run (20km) with the kai sandals I was owned. I thought my feet and legs were already accustomed to thin soles from using our warat shoes, I was dead wrong. With the kai sandals, it was totally different.

With the slipper soles, there was still a bit of cushioning on your feet when you landed. The kai sandals didn't and I took that for granted. Lesson learned, I should have taken it easy on that first long run.

But I must say the sandals are really nice. They are very, very light, which I didn't notice until I wore them. The leather straps makes moving so free and the leather sole does not rub hard on your foot. I think that's why I ran so fast on that first run since I really felt comfortable in the sandals. I always forget the first rule of doing anything which is to "Start slow".

When my calves fully recover, I will continue training with these sandals until I get used to them.
